Can you believe the new academic year is already in full swing? If you have been missing the Villanova HRD blog over the last few months, don't worry, we are officially back! This summer has been a busy time for #VUHRD, and I am excited to share with you what we have been up to while the blog was on hiatus.
In June, several VUHRD faculty and students attended the SHRM Annual Conference in Chicago. Villanova had a booth in the expo, and we were able to connect with hundreds of prospective students from all over the world! We even managed to make it to a Cubs game, well, almost. (The game we attended was rained out, but that didn't stop us from having fun!)
At the conference, we were able to learn from so many amazing speakers. Here are just a few of the nuggets of wisdom I took away from the conference:
Redefine culture fit. Hire for cultural contribution. Build an upward challenge network. Avoid organizational uniqueness bias. Create new channels for knowledge sharing. –Adam M Grant
If you align excellence (skills set), engagement (what you love doing), and ethics (your passions), people will love their work. –Daniel Goleman
Our personal brand is affected by how people feel about our profession. It is time to change the way others view HR. –Jennifer McClure
We need a company that is profitable and principled! HR is the key to coupling those together through strategy, culture and structure. –Oscar Munoz, CEO of United Airlines
If you don’t value people, get out of my profession! –Steve Browne
During the conference, I had the pleasure of connecting in person with one of the conference speakers, Jennifer McClure, and several of the SHRM18 Bloggers, Keith Enochs, Jazmine Wilkes, and Carlos Escobar! VUHRD will be launching a brand new podcast this semester featuring interviews with HR leaders, researchers, students and influencers, like Jennifer, Keith, Jazmine, and Carlos! You will hear my interviews with these four amazing HR Influencers on some of the first episodes. Stay tuned to the blog for the official podcast launch announcement!
Over the summer, VUHRD faculty have been hard at work on course design for several of the brand new electives coming to the program this year. With the launch of the new Graduate HRD Certificates, we will begin adding to the curriculum new electives in diversity, global leadership, ethics, and research methods, available soon for campus and online students! Next week's blog will feature an article written by Enio Velazco and a video intro of Enio and Luis Buentello, our faculty designers for Strategic & Global HR Leadership. Enio and Luis have extensive experience in Global HR Leadership, and I am so excited for them to share their knowledge with our students through this new course.
Last month I had the pleasure of welcoming our new students to VUHRD in the campus and online orientations! We are so excited for all the new students joining the program. We had over 60 students, both on campus and online, starting this semester! VUHRD has students from all over the world including China, Vietnam, Jordan, Brazil, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and India. We also have students from all branches of the military! (Thank you all for your service!) I can't tell you how proud I am to work in a program that welcomes so many diverse students to collaborate and learn as we live out our mission of creating global thought-leaders in HR to drive high performing, inclusive organizations and create meaningful work experiences!
We have so many exciting things up our sleeve in 2018 and 2019 including new elective classes, a new podcast, new faculty, and tons of events hosted by VUSHRM, our student SHRM chapter at Villanova! Stay plugged into the blog not to miss anything. We will be posting here once a week for the rest of the year. And don't forget to show us your Villanova HRD spirit on social media with #VUHRD and follow us on Twitter @VillanovaHRD!
