In this week's Research Spotlight Series, we are featuring a recently published article by Dr. Katina Sawyer & Dr. Christian Thoroughgood -- #VUHRD Assistant Professors -- on gender non-conformity and the modern workplace. In this edition of #VUHRDConversations, we discuss this recent publication with the authors, Dr. Katina Sawyer & Dr. Christian Thoroughgood. With this current hot topic in HR, researchers seek to illuminate the experience of individuals in the workplace who identify as gender non-binary and transgender individuals, with the hope that HR practitioners and leaders in organizations will work to advocate for inclusive policies and improved cultures in support of gender non-conforming employees.

Before we get into this conversation, check out a few relevant definitions below that will be discussed throughout the video. These terms are helpful to differentiate between in order to further discuss these ideas with each other.

  • Gender non-conformity: The spectrum of people who do not align with societal expectations for gender expression.

  • Gender non-binary: Any individual who doesn't conform to the more traditional male or female gender stereotypical way of expression.

  • Gender expression: The way in which a person expresses their gender identity, typically through their appearance, dress, and behavior.

  • Transgender (the "T" of the LGBT acronym): Denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex.
