Giving Thanks, Giving Back: Reflections for the Season

The Human Resources field, at its core, is centered around people. As a season of giving approaches, we pause to reflect on the individuals and moments that bring meaning to our work and lives. At Villanova, we are fortunate to belong to a community grounded in the values of Veritas (Truth), Unitas (Unity), and Caritas (Love). Our Villanova HRD community brings together students and professionals from many life stages and backgrounds, creating a learning environment filled with an abundance of perspectives and experiences. These differences are a defining strength of our community, yet our collective gratitude continuously shines through.

In the spirit of giving, our VUSHRM chapter is continuing a tradition of service by hosting a virtual food drive now through December 6 supporting Philabundance. With Giving Tuesday on December 2, we invite all to join us in making a meaningful impact. To contribute, please follow this link.

Philabundance, a local nonprofit with the goal of ending hunger in our communities, provides 2 meals for every $1 donated to someone facing food insecurity in the greater Philadelphia area. They are accepting online donations to their "Villanova SHRM" team to support this Philabundance Campaign. Thank you to all who support this cause!

In addition, Villanova University organizes an annual Thanksgiving Outreach initiative to provide donations of Thanksgiving Meal Boxes and ShopRite gift cards for individuals and families at North Light Community Center, Project HOME, Dawn's Place, and Strawberry Mansion Community Center.

Our Villanova HRD office, thanks to Assistant Director Sheila McLaughlin's organization efforts, assembled two full Thanksgiving Meal Boxes, each packed with all the ingredients needed for a holiday dinner. This effort is a meaningful way to support families who may not have the proper resources to afford a large Thanksgiving meal, serving as a reminder of the importance of gratitude, generosity, and community care. Each box included:

  • 10-15 lb turkey

  • 2 jars of turkey gravy

  • 2 jars of apple sauce

  • 4 cans of season vegetables

  • 2 cans of cranberry sauce

  • 5 lb. bag of potatoes

  • 2 boxes of stuffing

  • 1 pack of dinner rolls

  • 1 giant aluminum roasting pan

  • 1 fresh, non-frozen pie

While the holidays naturally encourage reflection and giving, HR professionals know that caring for others is a year-round responsibility. Whether we are supporting employees, classmates, or our broader communities, our work is rooted in empathy, connection, and service.

As we enter this season of gratitude, we hope you’ll take a moment to reflect on what, and who, matters most to you. Wishing all members of our Villanova HRD community a warm, restful, and joy-filled Thanksgiving.
